
I remembered Berkeley for the big rallies at Sproul Hall. But I also remembered its array of colorful individuals who would gather small crowds for their own personal crusades. In 1995 I saw a gray-haired man dressed in plaid shorts, red-and-white striped tennis shoes, yellow shirt, and yellow ball cap, amusing a small audience by reading from the newspaper and commenting on the day's news. During the afternoon, a young man came to campus with a three-foot-high object that looked like an oil drum and stood on it by Sather Gate.
