Flowers were abundant in the city after People's Park; they too were a symbol of peace. Some Berkeleyites placed flowers in the gun barrels of national guard rifles. The guardsmen responded good-naturedly. In ways the atmosphere was similar to that in Tinnemann Square in Bejing about twenty years later before things there turned ugly. The meeting at Berkeley was on a much smaller scale, and no shots were fired by the guard.
