In many respects the campus was a calmer place than it had been a generation before. Yes, there were lots of people at Sather Gate when I took this photo. But they were not there on behalf of a great cause. The center of attraction was a women's chorus. I liked their singing and all but forgot my search for the old Berkeley.
Later I went to the Bancroft Library, the campus archives, where I was surprised to learn that there are relatively few papers on the sixties. I had expected to find a large collection of oral histories from the period and perhaps some collections of letters and diaries. Surely someone would have spent ten or twenty hours interviewing Mario Savio for posterity. This was not the case, however. There were a few papers, but considering the importance of those years at Berkeley, the historical record seemed to be afflicted with amnesia.
